I learned long ago that you should always be ready to take good advice - no matter where it comes from.
This month, it came from a guy named Michael Dermer who touts himself in his blog and newsletter as The Lonely Entrepreneur. His words of wisdom were short, sweet, and spot-on. He said:
"Turn off at a respectable time, (because) many of the greatest mistakes have been made after 10 pm."
That all sounds good, sort of, but what is it that Mr. Dermer is really talking about? Here's how he explained…
It's no secret that millennial candidates care about much more than just collecting a bigger paycheck when looking for a new gig. These young professionals (who now make up the largest segment of the U.S. workforce) crave a sense of purpose in their work, both in their day-to-day job and the causes their employers support, even more than past generations. In fact, one-third of millennials say they're ready to take 10% pay cut in order to pursue work they're more passionate about.

I recently talked to a higher level candidate who has been job searching for months. He said the hardest and most frustrating part of the job search is trying to get that first conversation with the recruiter or HR. I speak with a lot of candidates who feel that if they are not working with a recruiter on their behalf, they are more than likely not getting that first conversation.
He shared an example where he applied directly to an organization and received the generic "sorry you haven't been…
More often than not, work takes longer than we think....In recruiting, "time to fill" is the number of days between when a job posting is approved, and the day the offer is accepted by the candidate. I've seen average time to fill rates range anywhere from 41 days to 62 days. Sometimes waay longer. The problem with focusing too much on time to fill i that it feeds right into a common bias we all have with our work, The Planning Fallacy. You can Google that term but essentially "The Planning…
Does this sound familiar? It's the first month of the work year. You're a little happy to be back (you love your kids but...). Although your inbox is overwhelming, you're ready to start fresh in the new year. You're working on your yearly kickoff meeting, excited about your new strategy, and have resolved to manage your time better. You're starting to feel, dare I say, excited.
Until suddenly you don't. Your chronically absent employee decides to extend this holiday vacation a few more days…
In 2008, Google turned it's analytics machine on its own employees in an attempt to discover what makes a good manager. Ten years later, they've come back with more research - results that echo and strengthen their earlier findings.
Learnings like this continue to be enormously impactful for organizations. In fact, according to their State of the American Manager report, Gallup asserts that "companies fail to choose the candidate with the right talent for the job 82% of the time." As it turns,…
When I first started in recruitment, there were so many moving pieces that I wasn't sure how I was ever going to get anything done without feeling frazzled and like I was forgetting something. Over the years, I've learned what really helps me and I wanted to share my tips for managing your workload and getting everything done!
Prioritize Openings
However your organization does it - by level of position, critically to products going out the door, etc. - prioritize your workload. Most recruiters…
Open, efficient communication drives innovation in the modern workplace, where it can facilitate knowledge transfer and problem-solving, reduce uncertainty, and break down geographic and managerial hierarchies.
And communication is no longer limited to email and the telephone. With the advent of a variety of collaboration tools such as Workplace by Facebook, Yammer, or Microsoft Teams, communication is taking place in countless ways across a variety of platforms.
Risky Employee Behavior in…
What do we think of when we envision the ideal leader? Maybe they are the one who has all the answers, the one who everyone goes to. Or maybe they're cool under pressure, you never see them sweat. They're definitely super confident and in control of everything. Doesn't that resonate well in the perfect-world scenario we like to create for ourselves? That's definitely what I thought leadership was, back when I was brand new and thought I knew everything. It's also completed bulldookey.
There is…
You've hired a new employee. They are excited for a new opportunity. Now what? Employee orientation is just as important to the employee as it is the company. If a new hire starts off on the right track, they are more likely to stay engaged and stay with the company longer. Maren Hogan, from Red Branch Media, stated "When you train your new employees in the ethos of the company while simultaneously showing them how to do their job, everyone wins."
Onboarding is defined by Merriam-Webster as…
